How can the new cycling infrastructure of an european metropole be experienced in a playful and engaging way? This interactive installation for the Mobility Agency of the City of Vienna shows it: visitors ride a real bicycle to virtually explore newly developed bike routes across the city.
The gameplay responds to classical bike interactions: pedaling determines how fast the player cycles through Vienna, hand gestures are used to wave away obstacles like a grumpy pedestrian and ringing the bell collects bonus items along the way. At the end of each route, players see their game score and can enter a prize draw using their smartphone.
Two versions of the installation were developed: one equipped with a Gazelle Classic city bike for adults, the other one with a Woom 5 bike tailored to children.
Both setups were realized with the generous support of our sponsors Garmin DACH, Woom Bikes, and Gazelle.
A special key feature is the fact that the entire setup folds down into a compact module tailored to the dimensions of the City of Vienna’s cargo bike trailers so they can be transported ecofriendly and assembled and operated by trained staff.
The whole installation was developed in collaboration with our friends from YAY Creative, who provided ideas for the user experience as well as the video footage and the visual assets.

The game begins with a short tutorial where you playfully confirm that you understand the two interaction options: waving and ringing. A countdown then begins, and the journey begins immediately.
